Arnold “Arno” Pearson Campbell was born 5 Mar 1888 in the city of Hespler, Canada. His father was a woolen mill worker at the time of his birth. His parents were John Richard and Milia [Connawarf] Campbell. He had three brothers. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1900 according to census records. They moved to Dallas, OR where Father John Sr. worked for the woolen mill. Their paternal grandmother Susan came with the family.

In 1905 when other family members moved to Salem to work for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, Arno age 22 and brother Charles, age 26, moved to Breitenbush, in the Santiam Canyon to work as loggers for a lumber mill. They are listed as partners in the venture on the census record.

Arno’s WWI draft registration card dated 5 June 1917 gave his physical description as medium height and build, with dark brown hair (partly bald) and brown eyes. His employer was Golden State Woolen Mill in Long Beach, CA. He was 29 years old, single, and a British subject born in Canada. His brother John Junior also worked at the Golden State Woolen Mill in Long Beach, both lived at the Eastman Hotel.

Arno married divorcee Golda Richardson on 9 Mar 1929 in Vancouver, WA. He was 40 years old. His residence was listed as Washougal, WA and his occupation, a wool spinner. Golda had two daughters from a previous marriage, Virginia age 9 and Verna age 7. A year later, the 1930 census recorded the family lived in Gibbons, Clark, WA. Arno continued to work as a spinner in a woolen mill.

After 1935, the family moved to Long Beach, CA where Arnold worked in the spinning department of the Golden State Woolen Mill. Their home at 2722 Spaulding St. is rented. Wife Goldie and two stepdaughters lived with him. Arno continued to work at this mill location thru 1940 according to census records. In 1942, his World War II draft registration recorded a new employer, the Woolen Mill in Santa Ana, CA. His physical description listed a height of  5 ft. 7 ½ in. and weight of 175 lbs. His complexion was ruddy, hair and eyes were brown.

His wife Goldie returned to Portland, OR with the girls and enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps on 22 Apr 1944 during World War II. She served on the homefront until 21 Jul 1945. Her civil occupation was listed as a skilled dressmaker and seamstress. By the 1950 census the couple had separated. Goldie lived in Washougal, WA and Arno was still in Long Beach, CA where he worked as a spinner in the textile industry. He lived in the Palace Hotel, a lodging house.
