The Oregon Statesman published “A reader’s view of the war”:

Just after stating that “Our African soldiers hurled themselves with unbridled fury” on the German regiments, the French war office in its bulletin of August 26, continues as follows: “Our arms will continue their magnificent effort in the knowledge that they are fighting in the cause of civilization.”

Yes, it is in the cause of French civilization that African hordes have been brought to central Europe to fight Teutonic “barbarism.” It is in the cause of Latin civilization that the noble English blood is shed, fighting in the same ranks with African hordes against “Teutonic barbarism.” It is in the cause of Paris civilization that the Anglo-Saxons, a Teutonic tribe, joins African negro and Moor bestiality, slav-Tartar bloodthirsty despotism and Mongol cupidity, in order to fight their own flesh and blood, Germany their own mother, Teutonic culture.

This fierce struggle of which the world is witness in these days, is that of “civilization” against “culture.” Do you realize, Mr. Editor, what that means? It means veneer against body; it means that truth, or as you say, “the real truth,” was in danger to be crushed by world deceiving hypocrisy. It is the desperate defensive fight of Teutonic culture against Latin civilization, after the latter have succeeded in getting support from all parts of the world, even from the Anglo-Saxons.

Luther’s “Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise; God help me; Amen” – is to be defended against Louis XIV’s “After us the deluge.” England took the part of Louis; she one day will resent it and will change front.

And America?

America keeps – neutral!

Dr. G. A. Wislicensus

Early on, the nature of the war began to take on a character, “Teutonic culture against Latin civilization,” that haunts us to this day.
