Life Story

Conrad Kantelberg worked at TKWM as a spooler, then spinner from 1905-1909. Father Gustave and two brothers Eric and William also worked at the mill.

Conrad Wilbern Kantelberg was born 4 July 1890 in Salem, OR to Gustav and Augusta [Walters] Kantelberg. He was the oldest of six children born to the couple. He attended public school up through the 8th grade in Salem. His father died in Apr 1914 from cancer, Conrad was 24.

His World War I draft registration card recorded his residence as Salem, OR and yet he registered in Harney County, OR. Also of interest is his physical description. He was tall with a medium build. His hair was brown, and his eyes were blue. The date was 5 Jun 1917.

On 2 July 1919 he married Gladys Harper in the United Evangelical Church in Salem, OR. The 29-year-old groom was a rancher and the 18-year-old bride a nurse. Both were residents of Salem. The Oregon Statesman newspaper reported at the time that:

Miss Gladys Harper and Conrad Kantelberg were married Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock at the United Evangelical church in the presence of only the immediate relatives. The Rev. G.L. Lovell read the impressive ring ceremony. Shortly after the wedding Mr. And Mrs. Kantelberg left by auto for Reno, Nev., where they will make their home.

In 1924, the couple moved to Portland for work at the Portland Woolen Mills. Conrad worked as a spinner. The 1930 census recorded the same information. Conrad was 34 years old and worked as a spinner at the woolen mill. Gladys was 29. The couple rented their home at 1225 Charleston St. in Portland for $15 / month.

Ten years later, Conrad still worked at the same job in the woolen mill. A daughter named Maurine has now joined the household, she is 14 years old. Additional family members in the form of a nephew, his wife and two children also live with Conrad and Gladys. In the week prior to the census being taken, Conrad worked 44 hours. The previous year he had worked 52 weeks. His income was $1350 in 1940. The couple rented their home at 7015 Jersey St. in Portland for $20 / month. He had worked 52 weeks the previous year (1939).

On his WW2 draft registration card, Conrad listed a residence in Hillsboro, OR. His employer was still Portland Woolen Mills. He was 51 years old. Date registration was filled out, 26 Apr 1942. He was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 155 pounds. His hair was gray and his eyes blue.

Wife Gladys died 27 July 1948 and Conrad died a little over a year later on 10 Nov 1949 in Hillsboro, OR. He was 59 years old and had been hospitalized after a mild cerebral hemorrhage. He was buried with wife Gladys in Forest View Cemetery, Forest Grove, OR.
