Life Story

Gustav Kantelberg worked as a napper and finisher at TKWM from 1893-1914. His sons Conrad, Erich and William also worked at the mill.

Gustav Herman Kantelberg was born in 1861 in Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1886. He received citizenship status on 3 Oct 1890 in Marion County, OR. Gustav married Augusta Walters in 1890 in Dallas, OR. They would be the parents of six children.

Gustav worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill from its early founding and after the first mill burned to the ground he, along with many Salem citizens, pledged money to help rebuild. He offered $200. The family lived on D Street in the Englewood neighborhood. In 1910, the family  moved to 1375 N 12th St. Gustav worked as a napper at the woolen mill. They owned their own house. The two oldest sons had moved out and the couple still had four children at home.

In 1913, tragedy struck with the death of ten-year-old son Walter. While playing with his brother, Walter was accidentally shot in the hand and though a doctor was called and treatment applied, he died of blood poison. His younger brother who was also injured, recovered.

Gustav died from cancer on 1 April 1914 in the Willamette Sanitorium, Salem, OR. He was 53 years old. His obituary stated that:

Mr. Kantelberg was an employee of the Kay woolen mills here, and resided with his family at 1375 North 12th street. Besides a widow, he leaves five children, Conrad, Eric, Willie, Ruth and Bennie, all of Salem.

The deceased leaves many warm personal friends at the Salem woolen mills, where he had worked for some time, and the employees of the mills today took up a collection with which to purchase floral sets for their old friend. The funeral will be held from the Germany Baptist church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock, and the remains will be laid to rest in Lee Mission Cemetery.
