Life Story 

 

George Hastings worked at TKWM from 1917 to 1929 along with other family members including his son George Jr.  

George Wesley Hastings was born 18 Aug 1874 in Canada. He was the son of Alford and Elizabeth Hastings. He married Ida Allport 18 Nov 1891 in Galt, Ontario, Canada. The couple would have 13 children total. Ten born in Canada and three in Salem.  

George’s profession as listed in the 1901 Canadian census was a molder. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and came to join Ida’s family in Salem, Oregon. By 1917 he had a job working as a carder at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. His father-in-law Thomas was boss carder. He worked for the mill until 1929. 

His physical description was documented on his World War I draft registration card. He was of medium height, medium build, with light brown hair and blue eyes. In 1930 he went back to work as a machinery molder. He was employed at Salem Iron Works. The family moved to 434 S. 16th St. a home owned by Ida’s parents. By 1940 they had purchased the home. 

George’s wife I Ida died suddenly on 29 Sep 1953 from an esophageal hemorrhage. She was 78 years old. George died the following year on 3 Feb 1954 from prostate cancer. He was 79 years old. They were both cremated and ashes placed in Mt. Crest Abbey Mausoleum.
