Life Story

Hannah Hastings worked as a spooler at TKWM in 1917. Her father and brother also worked at the mill.

Hannah Hastings was born 1 Jun 1900 in Ontario, Canada to George W. and Ida [Allport] Hastings. She was one of 13 children born to the couple. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 to join her grandparents in Salem. Her grandfather Thomas Allport was boss carder at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

Hannah attended public school until the 8th grade, then left to go to work as a machine operator at a glove factory in Salem. In 1917 she worked briefly for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a spooler. By the 1920 census, her occupation is listed as a telephone operator with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph, in Salem, OR. She lived at home with her parents.

She married Walter Goughnour on 7 Oct 1922 in the Christian Church in Salem, OR. He was an auto mechanic who owned his own garage on State St., and she was a telephone operator. It was the first marriage for them both; they were in their twenties. Walter’s family had moved to Salem in 1907. He was a veteran of World War I.

Hannah continued to work for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph until the mid 1930s when husband Walter made a career move, to become a manager at Smith’s Tavern. In 1948 they bought the tavern, remodeled it, and it became Walt’s Place. It was a popular place at an ideal location on 515 S. 12th St. Directly across from the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill and Del Monte Cannery.

In 1959, Walter had a heart attack which led to his early retirement and the sale of the tavern to longtime employee and family member Virgil Zwicker. He died 3 Dec 1961 in Salem General Hospital from heart failure. He was 65 years old. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Salem Elks Lodge and the American Legion. Hannah died 12 Aug 1978 at a local nursing home in Salem. Both Walter and Hannah were cremated. The location of their ashes was unknown at the time of research.
