In 1980, an $18 million fund raising drive was begun by the University. Several major academic buildings were renovated, campus grounds were improved and the Mark O. Hatfield Library was built thanks to the money that was raised. The Library is named for the former Oregon governor and US Senator who grew up in Salem and attended Willamette University.

The Mark O. Hatfield Library addresses the needs of Willamette University students and most of the materials on Salem’ s history duplicate publications found in other libraries. To document Willamette University, as an aspect of Salem’s history, a variety of yearbooks, micro filmed newspapers and college catalogs are available.
