Hubert Seamster worked in various capacities for TKWM from 1917-1959. Siblings Robert, Harley and Earl also worked for the mill.
Hubert A Seamster was born 23 Apr 1903 in Pea Ridge, Arkansas to Isaiah and Anna Seamster. The family moved from Arkansas to Salem in 1911 when Hubert was 8 years old. By 1916 Father Isaiah left the family to return to Arkansas leaving wife Anna and the younger children to the support of the older boys who worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Hubert joined his brothers at the mill in the weaving department in 1917 and remained until the mill closed.
Hubert married Bernice Hazel Crook on 14 Dec 1929 in Mill City, OR. They were the parents of two children, Hubert and Beverly Joan. The Seamster brothers opened a service station on Summer and Fairgrounds Rd in Salem in 1929. All of them worked part-time there while continuing to work at TKWM.
Hubert was excused from service in WW2 based on his work in a critical wartime industry. He continued to progress with higher responsibilities at TKWM moving from a weaver to a chain builder and ending his career as the foreman of the dressing department. After the mill closed, he worked as supervisor of the mail room for the State Dept. of Motor Vehicles for nine years. He was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and Sons of the American Revolution. He died 8 May 1979 following a heart attack, at the age of 76. He was buried in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, OR. Wife Bernice would join him in 1995. |
