Theresa Mary Silbernagel was born 8 Feb 1910 in Scio, OR to Christopher and Rose [Bender] Silbernagel. She was one of eight children born to the couple. She attended public schools until the 8th grade. 

Theresa married William “Bill” Bauer on 24 Nov 1936 in Jordan, OR. Bill was a weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill and Theresa still lived on her family’s farm. He was 33 years old and she was 21, it was the first marriage for both. The wedding took place in the Catholic Church, Our Lady of Lourdes, in Jordan on a Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. according to the newspaper account which follows: 

The choir sang the nuptial high mass, with John and Sylvester Silbernagel, brothers of the bride, singing the Ave Maria at the offertory. The church was beautifully decorated with ferns and white chrysanthemums, with white tapers arranged among them. The bride was lovely in a tip-toe length white satin dress, made along princess lines. Her silk tulle veil of train length was caught up about her head in a Juliet cap of seed pearls. She carried a shower bouquet of white carnations and pink rosebuds as well as her mother’s “mother of pearl” rosary. 

In the evening, a dance was held in the couple’s honor at the Forester Hall in Scio. Following their marriage, the couple made their home at 1630 Lee St. In Salem.  

Bill continued to work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill while Theresa found work at the Fruit Cannery. She joined Bill at the mill by 1950. The couple had no children. 

Theresa died on 11 May 1960 in Salem Memorial Hospital, at the age of 50. She had been ill for approximately six months from unknown causes. An autopsy performed after her death revealed Cushing’s Disease. She was buried at Belcrest Memorial Park. Her husband Bill passed away 38 years later and was buried by her side.
