Life Story Vera Blanchard worked at TKWM from 1936 to 1944 and again from 1954 to 1962 in a secretarial, bookkeeper role. Husband Harry Blanchard also worked for the mill, as well as her sister Helen Moullet Fox.

Vera Moullet was born 5 Sep 1909 in Sodaville, OR to Alfred and Lilly [Darby] Moullet. She was the eldest of three children born to the couple. By the age of 7 months, her family had moved to Portland, OR where her father worked as a laborer in cement work. By 1920, the family had moved to the Pringle area of Salem. Her father farmed and worked as a seasonal logger. In 1922, her father was killed in a logging accident near Valsetz. He was felling a tree when it broke unexpectedly, and a piece of the tree struck him, killing him instantly. Vera’s mother remarried to Isaac M. Howe, a contractor.

The family returned to Salem where Vera took a job as a bookkeeper for Doolittle’s Auto Sales and Repair, an auto parts store. Vera’s sister Helen introduced her to a fellow weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill where she worked. His name was Harry Joseph Blanchard and they married 15 Feb 1936 in Vancouver, WA. By 1940 Vera had joined Harry at the woolen mill, working in the office as a stenographer. They lived at 1030 Wilbur St.

At the start of World War II, Harry enlisted and went to war. Vera remained in Salem and worked at TKWM. After the war, Harry went to work for Doolittle’s Auto Sales and Repair. Then in October 1946, the couple opened a variety store in West Salem, a business that only lasted for two years. Then Harry went into the garbage hauling business with his brother-in-law, Harvey Moullet.

In the early 1980s the couple retired and moved to Reedsport, OR. Vera died 9 Jan 1986 in Reedsport and was buried in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, OR. Husband Harry died 12 Sep 1992 at the age of 77.
