Story  Vern Mentzer worked for TKWM from 1917-1963 as a dryer then foreman.

Vernon Printz Mentzer was born in Youngstown, Ohio on 30 Nov 1896 to George and Martha (Printz) Mentzer. George was a farm laborer in 1900 and was looking for a better life for his family. By 1910, the family had moved to Salem where George found work as a foundry worker. By 1913, Vern was about 17 and still a student when his father began working at TKWM as a mechanic. Soon after graduation, Vern joined his father at TKWM working as a dryer. The family lived at 946 N 17th.

By 1917, Vern had met Edith Wilhelmina Warner whose father Jacob worked with George as a mechanic at TKWM. The couple married on 21 Mar 1918 when Vern was 21 and Edith was 24. They lived at the Mentzer house on 17th at first. However, their initial married happiness was interrupted by Vern being drafted into the Army shortly before the end of WW 1. His service began on 15 Sep 1918 and ended on 20 Jan 1919, two months after the war’s end.

Vern quickly returned to civilian work at TKWM and in 1920, Vern and Edith were living at 1045 N 20th in Salem. In 1930, Vern and Edith lived at 855 N 18th while Vern was an assistant dyer at TKWM. By that time, sons Arthur and Robert had joined the family. Vern and Father George weathered the Depression with continued employment at TKWM.

By 1940, Vern, Edith and the two boys were living at 1245 N 17th in a home that they owned. Vern was back to being an assistant dyer but with war production ramping up; he was promoted to a shift foreman position. He remained a foreman for another 20 plus years and retired shortly before Edith’s passing in 1963. Vern passed away on 28 Sep 1972. He and Edith are buried in Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem.
