Life Story

Bill Bauer worked in the weaving department at TKWM from 1932 to 1942. His father George worked briefly for the mill, as well as Bill’s wife Theresa.

William Stephen Bauer was the youngest of nine children born to George and Mary [Ziegler] Bauer. He was born 20 Aug 1903 in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. The Fall of 1903, the family moved to Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada where father George took up a land claim. By the 1916 Canadian census, mother Mary has passed away and oldest daughter Mary has taken over the household duties. Bill attended public school in Canada and left in 7th grade.

The family remained in Canada until the 1920 census where we find them in Salem, OR. All of Bill’s brothers remained in Canada and established families and property of their own. Sisters Mary and Annie came to the United States with father George, and Bill. The 1920 U.S. census records their address as 670 S. 18th St. in Salem. Father George had a job as a picker at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

By 1930 the family had left Salem and moved to a farm in Jordan near Scio, Oregon. Father George took his life on the farm property in October 1932. After this, William took a job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the weaving department. He remained at the mill until 1942.

Bill married Theresa Mary Silbernagel on 24 Nov 1936 in Jordan, OR. He was 33 years old and his bride was 21. It was the first marriage for both of them. Following their marriage celebration, the couple returned to Bill’s home in Salem at 1630 Lee St. The couple would have no children.

In 1942, Bill’s physical description was recorded on his draft registration card. His height was 5’7 ½ inches and his weight, 142 pounds. His complexion was dark and he had brown hair and brown eyes.

In 1945 he took a job working for Oregon Pulp and Paper. Then, from 1947-1951 he worked as a bottler for Sick’s Brewery. Following that, he took a job in the maintenance department of Willamette University.

His wife Theresa died on 11 May 1960 in Salem, at the age of 50. She was buried at Belcrest Memorial Park. Bill remarried twice following her death. The first time to Eva Magdelen Hemann on 11 Feb 1961. Eva was the widow of fellow TKWM employee George Hemann who had died suddenly of a heart attack back in 1951. At the time of the marriage, Bill was the superintendent of maintenance at Willamette University. The marriage lasted only 5 years. Eva died 11 Aug 1966 of a heart attack.

Bill Bauer married a third time to Edith Goldie Redding on 4 Feb 1969 in Salem, OR. She was a housekeeper at Willamette University, he was retired by this point. They were both widowed. She 3 Apr 1973. Bill Bauer had outlived three wives.

For a brief period of time, he boarded with fellow TKWM employees such as Ed Antrican. Bill Bauer died 26 May 1998 in Salem, OR. He was buried with his first wife Theresa in Belcrest Memorial Park.
