Life Story

Fred Fox worked as a laborer in the finishing department at TKWM from 1918-1919. Sons Glenn and Earl also worked for the mill.

Frederick William Fox was born 24 Dec 1879 in Naples, New York to Jacob Wilhelm and Caroline Sick Fox. He finished elementary school to the 8th grade.

He married Grace Iva Brink 16 Jan 1908 in Ontario, New York. They would become parents of five children – Kenneth, Lionel, Earl, Doris, and Glenn. Tragically, in August 1910, the couple’s oldest son Kenneth died.

The family came to the Willamette Valley in 1913. From 1918-1919 Fred worked in the finishing department of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. By the 1920 census, the family has rented a home on Oak Grove Rd. In West Salem where Fred works as a laborer on a fruit farm. A year later, tragedy struck the family again with the death of 5-year-old son Lionel.

By the 1930 census, the family had purchased a berry farm in Chemawa, OR. Then in 1934 they traded their 3-acre farm for a farm near Dallas, OR. They spent the summer of 1934 working around the valley and moved to their new home in the Fall.

From Fred’s WW2 draft registration card we learn his physical description. He was 5’5” tall and weighed 190 lbs. He had a ruddy complexion. His hair was brown and his eyes, gray.

In 1943 the family moved to Portland. They later returned to Salem where Fred worked for Paulus Brothers Cannery before retirement. Fred died 24 April 1967 in Elderest Nursing home on 12th St. in Salem, from a cerebral vascular accident. He was buried 28 Apr 1967 in City View Cemetery.
