Life Story

Tillie Zwicker worked as a weaver at TKWM from 1917-1919. Other Zwicker family members also worked at the mill including Tillie’s twin Lillian.

Otillie “Tillie” Marie Zwicker and twin sister Lillian Augusta were born 20 Jan 1899 in Salem, OR. They were the last of thirteen children born to German immigrants George and Clara Zwicker.

Tillie and sister Lillie worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the weaving department. It was here that Tillie met her future husband.

She married Ferdig Hall on 27 Apr 1918 in Vancouver, WA. The couple lived in Ferdig’s family home at 478 S 16th in Salem. Two children were born to the couple, Shirley and Wayne.

Her husband Ferdig remained at the mill for 50 years, beginning as a loom fixer and eventually becoming the spinning room shift supervisor. The couple moved to 465 S 15th St. in Salem and remained in this home until retirement. When Tillie returned to work after the children were school age, she took a job at the Del Monte Cannery and remained there until retirement.

She died 3 Apr 1976 in Albany Hospital. She was buried in Restlawn Memory Gardens in West Salem, OR. Husband Ferdig lived until the age of 94 and died on 22 Sep 1989 in Albany, OR. He was buried by her side in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
