Maude Allport worked for TKWM as a weaver around 1900, along with other Allport family members.
Maude Josephine Allport was born 18 Apr 1882 in Woodstock, Oxford, Ontario, Canada to Thomas and Aurelia [LaQue] Allport. She was one of eight children born to the couple. She attended school up through sixth grade. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1898 for work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Her father had previously worked at the Woolen Mill in Galt, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and had been hired as foreman of the TKWM carding dept.
On 7 Aug 1901 Maude married Ira Howe Towne at the home of her parents in Salem. The groom was a Salem resident, who had recently returned from Alaska, according to the newspaper account of their wedding. The couple would have four sons. Husband Ira was a grocer, who sold his business in 1904, and took up farming. He moved his family first to Wheatland, WA. Then by 1920, the census records them in Dietrich, ID. Then came their final move to Josephine County, OR where they purchased land outside Grants Pass to cultivate.
Husband Ira died 9 Jan 1945 in Grants Pass. Maude followed on 26 Aug 1961. Both are buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Grants Pass, OR. |
