Life Story

Queenie Allport worked briefly at TKWM in August of 1914, in the burling dept. Her father and other family members also worked for the mill.

Queen Alice Margaret Allport was born 5 Sep 1897 in Galt, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada to Thomas and Aurelia [LaQue] Allport. She was one of eight children born to the couple, seven of whom lived to adulthood. The family immigrated to the United States in 1898. Her father was offered a job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as the foreman of the carding department. They built a home on the corner of Bellevue and 17th Streets. Queenie attended public school in Salem and graduated from high school. She also worked briefly in the burling department at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

She married Carl Hultenberg 20 Oct 1917 in Salem, OR. According to a newspaper account, a double wedding took place. Both grooms were soldiers assigned to Company M. Sergeant Robert A. Frazer married Queenie’s best friend Ethel Hall. Queenie married Private Carl E. Hultenberg. Queenie and Carl had met while working together at the C.M. Epply store in Salem. Both couples had one night together following the wedding ceremony before Company M departed for Camp Greene.

After his return from WW1 Carl went into the tire business. He worked first for Columbia Tire Corp, then opened a location at Front and Center St. where he handled the Sieberling tire line for several years. In 1932 he leased a new location at North High and Center St. and moved the family to the house on the property. Prior to that they had lived at 460 S. 16th. Two children were born to the couple, son Carl and daughter Marion.

After Carl retired, the couple moved to Pacific City. This was their home for seventeen years until Pearl’s illness brought them back to Salem, closer to medical care and family. It was here that Pearl died 12 May 1961, she was 63 years old. Carl died 18 Jun 1973. Both were buried in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, OR.
