Norman Allport worked as a carder at TKWM from 1900 to 1920 when he left to work for the Knight Woolen Mill in Provo, Utah. He returned to Salem and TKWM in 1924 and worked until his death in 1930.
Norman Lewis Allport was born 9 July 1878 in Canada to Thomas and Aurelia [Laque] Allport. He was one of seven children born to the couple. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1896. Norman was 18 years old when he came to Salem. He took work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill with his father Thomas.
On 4 July 1901 Norman married Augusta Donaldson at her mother’s home in Dallas, OR. Gusta’s father had died in 1892. Her brothers worked at the Kay Woolen Mill. In 1910 they moved to Eugene to start a family business that was short-lived. Then in 1920 they moved to Provo, Utah where Norman took a job as foreman of the Knight Woolen Mill.
In 1924, the family returned to Salem. They lived at 478 S. 16th St. Norman returned to work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as boss carder. They were the parents of ten children: Alice, Carl, Norman, Emil, Florence, Ellen, Thomas, Donald, Aurelia, and Lawrence. Sadly, on 5 July 1930 Norman suffered a heart attack following a baseball game played at a family reunion. He was 51 years old. Augusta was left a widow without support, and children still living at home. She took a job in the weaving department of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill where she worked until retirement in 1952. Augusta Allport died in Salem on 8 Oct 1955 and was buried with Norman in Belcrest Memorial Park. |
