Story  Patrick Foley worked as a sorter for TKWM at the time of its opening in 1890.

Patrick Foley was born in Ireland around about 1843 and immigrated to the US in 1860. He may have first lived in Illinois and served during the Civil War. Further research is needed to confirm. Patrick married Catherine Douglas in 1868

By 1870 Patrick and Catherine were living with their young son John in Salem according to the 1870 Federal Census. At the time, Patrick worked working as a wool sorter, a trade he would continue for the better part of 40 years. By 1880, the Foley’s had added three more children to their family and had moved to Liberty St. At the reporting of the census, Patrick was working as a saloon keeper.

In 1890 Patrick was back in the wool business working at TKWM as the assistant lead wool sorter and living on Mill St, 2 blocks east of Commercial in Salem. A few years after that, the family moved to Portland where Patrick continued to work in the wool mill industry. By 1900, two more children had been added to the family. In 1910, the Foley’s took on boarders while living at 434 Samhill St, Portland, OR.

Sometime between 1910 and 1919, the family moved to Oregon City, where Catherine passed away in September of 1919. Soon after, Patrick and son George moved to farmland in Clackamas County. George never married and remained with his father till the end

Patrick died 18 February 1921 in Portland and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Salem, St. Joseph’s (now St. Barbara Cemetery). His wife Catherine and daughter Mary are buried there as well. Patrick’s grave was unmarked until 1936 when a veteran’s headstone was arranged for.
